Oct. 27: Socialism and the Indigenous Struggle for Justice

Tuesday, October 27 @ 7 to 8:30 PM

Conserver House, 180 St. John Street in Fredericton

Socialist Project Fredericton invites you to this workshop led by David Bedford: Socialism and the Indigenous Struggle for Justice. Introductory remarks by Andrea Bear Nicholas.

The struggle of Indigenous people for justice, like the struggle for all peoples for justice in contemporary Canada, must take the nature of capitalism into account. This includes an examination of the Canadian state’s undermining of First Nations’ spirituality, its systematic dismantling of their mode of governance, its attack on the forms of social organization, and its undermining of the traditional Aboriginal economy.

Dr. David Bedford was Professor of political science at the University of New Brunswick until his retirement in 2019. He has written extensively on the struggle for justice for Indigenous people including his book: The Tragedy of Progress: Marxism, Modernity, and the Aboriginal Question (Fernwood Publishing).

Andrea Bear Nicholas, Professor Emerita at St. Thomas University, is author of Bilijk: A Documentary History of Kingsclear First Nation, 1783-1950 (Goose Lane Editions, 2026).
