Everyone is invited to this workshop hosted by Socialist Project Fredericton.
Saturday, June 13 at 2 PM
Conserver House, 180 St. John St., Fredericton
Tobin LeBlanc Haley, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of New Brunswick, interrogates the problem of housing unaffordability impacting growing numbers of households in Canada. Moving beyond the conceptualization of the current housing “crisis,” she traces the decades of policy decisions and logics that led us to this moment, offers a critical analysis of the current responses from decision-makers and suggests alternatives.
With opening remarks by Jeffrey Brown, associate professor of historical studies, University of New Brunswick, and scholar of American labour history and political culture.
Jeff Brown (seated) and Thom Workman at the SPF Bisbee ’17 event on May 20, 2026
Bisbee ’17 is a non-fiction feature film by Sundance award winning director Robert Greene set in Bisbee, an eccentric old mining town on the Arizona-Mexico border that finally reckons with its darkest day: the deportation of 1200 immigrant miners 100 years ago.
Locals collaborate to stage recreations of their controversial past. Radically combining documentary and genre elements, the film follows several members of the close knit community as they collaborate with the filmmakers to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Bisbee Deportation, where 1200 immigrant miners were violently taken from their homes by a deputized force, shipped to the desert on cattle cars and left to die.
This International Workers’ Day, we gather across New Brunswick to affirm a simple truth: a worker is a worker, no matter where we come from or the immigration status we hold. You are invited to a powerful two‑city May Day forum bringing together migrant justice organizers from Minneapolis, New Brunswick, and beyond.
A Worker is a Worker — May Day Forum
With Minneapolis & New Brunswick migrant justice organizers
We are honoured to welcome Aizar Cabrera from the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Centre, who will speak about the ongoing battle for survival in Minneapolis and how migrant communities are building solidarity in the face of escalating attacks.
In January 2026, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents killed Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti on the streets of Minneapolis. Six more people have died in ICE custody since the start of the year. Yet Canada continues to treat the U.S. as a “safe third country,” blocking many from seeking refugee protection here if they first enter through the U.S.
On this global day of worker solidarity, we will examine how capitalists and government policies divide the working class—here in New Brunswick, in Minneapolis, and across borders. And we will highlight the migrant workers and advocates who are organizing to make work safer and more dignified for all.
Speakers include:
Wolastoq Grand Council Chief Ron Tremblay – Fredericton event
Stacy Plummer, New Brunswick migrant worker & MWAC advocate
Niger Saravia, Migrant Workers Alliance for Change
Cristian Sanabria, Madhu Verma, Migrant Justice Centre
