About

Socialist Project Fredericton grew from an event hosted by the NB Media Co-op and partners in October 2025, the Social Forum in Wolastokuk. At the event, organizers experienced big appetite for engaging with socialism.

One of the workshops at the Social Forum included a presentation by vistors from Toronto’s Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education. The panel, Capitalism, Socialism, Activism: What can we expect to achieve? raised the question: Would it be possible to form an organization to promote socialist education in Fredericton?

The answer is yes. The Socialist Project Fredericton (SPF) is now a committee of the Socialist Project, which hosts the Leo Panitch School. The Socialist Project is a Toronto-based organization that supports the rebuilding of the socialist Left in Canada and around the world.

The Socialist Project Fredericton committee is tapping into the resources and capacity of our socialist colleagues in Toronto to build on the resources we develop here.

As socialists we hold that capitalism is an unsustainable system that consigns the vast majority of humankind to a life of excruciating toil, suffering, and insecurity.

Over the last two centuries, socialist analysis has shown that an economic system based on the unlimited pursuit of profits lies at the root of a litany of problems including labour exploitation, poverty, war, grotesque wealth inequality, unemployment and under-employment, growing social anxiety, periodic economic crises, and recurrent bouts of right-wing extremism.

Socialists also directly implicate capitalism in the two existential crises bearing down upon humanity at this foreboding historical juncture: the possibility of global thermonuclear war and the growing fear of a looming ecological collapse.

We invite everyone to join us at the Socialist Project Fredericton launch meeting in February 2026.
